Poetry Monday: Tomatoes

It's Poetry Monday, and this week's topic is ..... TOMATOES.

Join Diane, MotherOwl, Mimi, and contributors in the comments, as they try their poetic hand at this juicy topic.

I will be sitting out once again, but feel free to leave your poems in the comments and they will be published as usual.

Use the topic, or not; the idea is to enjoy the process.

Thank you for all the comments on my last post. Once again, I am touched by your support and good wishes.

There is still no progress on a diagnosis for my husband, but I will update you when there is news.

In the meantime, here is a link I hope you enjoy.

And for those who prefer a picture, here is a screen grab from the video at that link:

But the video is better :)

(This is one way I deal with anxiety - looking at pictures of kittens and videos of kittens. Another way is, believe it or not, cleaning things. Heresy, I know, but useful.)

The topic for next week will be ..... NATURE ... brought to you by Diane.

Mimi has suggested "The Kitchen" for the following week. Thank you, Mimi.

All suggestions are very welcome.

Have a good week, everyone.

  1. Cleaning works for anxiety and depression. There's something about simply improving the area you inhabit in whatever small way that seems tom have the ability to break through the gathering gloom, and when you finish, things are undeniably better than they were just a while ago, which can be empowering when you are feeling adrift.

    So, let's see, Tomatoes?

I seem to forget, every time
    Just how many
Of the hopeful little yellow flowers
Were on the carefully tended plant.
Until they all ripen at once
And I scramble to pick them
Before they fall in the dirt.
And I'll be heard to say
Whatever am I to do with all of these
    Before they get squishy?

    1. Yes, it always seems to be too little or too much, doesn't it. Get cooking, Doug!

    2. Love this poem, Doug. I planted tomatoes but either the chipmunks that have taken over the lawn or the squirrels that have taken over the trees or some other little unknown beast must be eating them because I have not had your over abundance problem!

  3. I absolutely love tomatoes and we call them tommy toes. My son called them that when he was just a tot and the name has stuck.

I planted some tomato seeds and thought they'd stay quite small
The blimmin things kept growing and they're halfway up the wall
That shouldn't be a worry right? but the problem is you see
The pot is meant for strawberries and not a tommy tree
But wait, hang on a minute because the fruit is very sweet
I'll just enjoy the tommy's as they really are a treat

Holding you in my heart. Tightly.

  9. You and your husband are in my thoughts and I hope you will get your answers soon.

My Daisy loves TV and will sit in front of it watching it for long periods of time. She once watched a movie, Nine Lives, for an hour and a half, and then got up and left five minutes before the ending. I think she knew that it wasn’t going to end well for the cat.

  12. Hello, Jenny. As far as your husband's health is concerned, let us hope that 'no news is good news'. The Tomatoes theme had me floored at first, but I eventually managed the following:

    A Tomato Feast

In a basket in a market, down in southern France
A heap of ripe tomatoes caught the interested glance
Of a travelling man, a gourmet, who knew a thing or two
About this fruit so versatile. He mused on what he’d do
With such a tempting trophy of tomatoes red and yellow.
Carefully sliced upon a plate and lightly splashed with mellow
Virgin olive oil, some seasoning, a few herbs,
He could make a simple salad that would taste superb.
He took his wicker baskets and filled them to the brim.
The piles of sunshine colours and the scent just dazzled him.

He carried back his treasures to his old and trusty van
And in his tiny kitchen, with the tomatoes he began
    To cook. He chopped and sliced and pureed; he made salsa, he made sauces;
Pizzas, pasta, casseroles called on his culinary resources.
Then as the sun began to set his hungry friends appeared
Bringing with them bread and wine and copious good cheer.
They knew that their ‘Tomato King’ would lay on a good spread.
They shared platter after platter until all were royally fed.

And as the sky filled up with stars they stood and raised a toast
To the glory of tomatoes, and their kind and genial host.

  13. So sorry you are beset with worry. The frustration of not knowing must be unbearable. Shut yourself in the bathroom and scream if you have to. Apart from that, continue to take good care of yourself. I am thinking of you.

  14. That kitten is so rapt. I just glanced right and saw "Dewey". A nice connect. Sleep tight; hope your questions go away soon.

  15. Yes, i can believe that cleaning releases stress. You and your husband are in my prayers.

Wracking my brains for a topic, have you ever used the kitchen as a topic? It is the heart of the home, of course.

  17. I hope and pray from the bottom of my heart that May your husband'sdisease be diagnosed soon so proper treatment can take place amen!
I can imagine the harrowing situation you are going through my dear Jenny. I believe all will be good by the grace of God! You just have faith and stay as strong as you have been always!

Responsibilities, I think only those can understand the meaning of this word who are in love with humanity ,everyone and eveverything around them.
Love makes us responsible and gives purpose to our living a meaningful purpose!
I think you know this far better than me because you fulfilled your all rolls incredibly beautifully!
Will be waiting for good news about your husband's health my friend!
    Hugs
