Springy Things, Plus Funnies

Even though the vernal equinox is still three days away, there are signs of spring everywhere here. A snowfall on Tuesday was followed by rain, so the ground is mostly brown again. The river has frozen and thawed too many times to count. The sun is warm and the wind is numbing cold. Yep, it's spring in Atlantic Canada.

Ice patterns in the river. I keep seeing a salamander shape there.

Mucky path or mucky grass -- neither one is my preferred walking medium. But it's spring!

Our irises are peeping out. They are on the south side of our house, so they get a head start.

Sad little piles of snow sit forlornly in the oddest places.

Hummingbirds and flowers -- a garden stepping stone. In the summer it is completely surrounded by perennial plants. At the moment, it is sitting (along with its mossy fringe) in the middle of a huge patch of muck. Hopefully things will rise from the swamp in a month or so. Plant-type things.

This also happens in the spring:

And for the dog-lovers, because this is an equal opportunity blog:

And finally, this:

.... known in some circles as "the weekend" ...

Have a good one!

  1. Spring is SUCH an exciting time. Even half a world away I am feeling it.
Loved the funny - and yes, the last would definitely start the apocalypse here.
    Have a lovely weekend.

    1. I hope you are having cooler weather now, EC. Spring is lovely, but so is fall. As I see it, the only thing bad about spring is that the heat is still to come.

  2. Okay...it's a good job you can't see the fat chick falling off her wheelchair courtesy of riotous laughter...Enjoy your weekend!

    1. Same to you, Delores! I don't know about glorious, but it could be worse - there could be three feet of snow out there :)

  4. Yes, spring is a muddy time! I hadn't even realized the equinox was so close. Love the LOLCATS!

    1. It always does, eventually, but some years it's hard to wait.

  6. HAHAHA! I had a good laugh with those funny images, especially the one about starting the apocalypse :)

Ah, spring in Canada. That's how it starts - messy, grey, muddy. But thankfully it gets better and prettier as time goes on.

    1. And I, for one, appreciate the better weather after having the worser weather :)

  7. Not the kind of springtime pictures I am used to - but interesting all the same. Loved the cat in the window picture.

    1. Our pictures will look more like yours do now, just about in time for the June solstice. Stay tuned :)

  8. So I've been thinking that it's too damn early for the peach tree to be covered with little, pink, buds, but spring is only three more days? I take it all back.

    1. What the calendar says and what your weather says may be two different things :)

  9. I am so glad spring is just around the corner. I loved those animal pics. The first cat one cracked me up, and the second one hit a little close to home as that is something Ms. Frizzle has been doing. Have a great weekend.

    1. Yes, it's one thing to see a funny picture and quite another to live with it :)

  10. Hey Jenny,

Ah yes, spring is imminent in Atlantic Canada, eh. Love the photos and the captions. Penny the Jack Russell and modest internet superstar also had a good chuckle.

Here's to the hope that spring brings. Of course, the weather over here in England is now tropical. In other fake news...

Have a lovely weekend, my friend.

    Gary :)

    1. "Imminent" may even be a tad optimistic :) Although the weather has been so strange, we might see the green earlier than usual. I would love to see Penny the Jack Russell and modest internet superstar chuckle :) Take care, Gary.

  11. Animals are such expressive creatures aren't they? :D I have to admit to preferring cats to dogs, even though I believe in equality too. ;)

I thought that stepping stone was some mouldy old fungi! I do need new reading glasses. :D

    1. Haha! The stone is getting worn down and losing its colour - it has been in that spot for about fifteen years, maybe more. It does look like fungi, doesn't it? and yes, equality for all :)

  12. Wow, Jenny-we have more snow here than you do! We got another foot on Tuesday but it has stayed mostly cold since then, so no melting. That first cat picture cracked me up.

    1. I heard you got a lot of snow last week; we got the same storm but clearly got off easy this time. I know your pain; it feels especially frustrating this time of the year when the birds should be singing and the sprouts sprouting. Hopefully things will warm up and it will melt fast.

I have to admit, that cat photo cracks me up every time I look at it :) Glad other people like it too!

  13. Happy Spring! The cat and dog comics gave me a laugh! I'm not sure I'd let that cat out no matter what it told me - it looks dangerously deranged.

I'm envying your irises right now - our new yard is nothing but barren mud. We went to the garden centre the other day and my brain nearly exploded with the effort of not buying everything in the store. (But we did get a nice Rainier cherry tree and a couple dozen strawberry plants.)

    1. I'll trade you my irises for your cherry tree! Mmm, cherries ... It must be exciting (and maybe a little daunting?) to be starting your yard and garden from scratch. A blank slate!

    2. You're right, it's both exciting and daunting. If I was familiar with gardening in this climate I wouldn't worry so much, but I'm afraid I'll plant something that would normally grow well in Calgary, only to wake up one morning to find that it's taken over our entire yard and swallowed the house entirely overnight. But the cherries... oooh, I can hardly wait! :-)

    3. Yes, that's actually a thing a person needs to consider. Well, maybe it wouldn't happen overnight, but close :)
