It's Going to be Breezy and Damp in Donkeyland

Hurricane Fiona is headed toward the Atlantic Provinces here in Canada. It's a storm that we are being "strongly encouraged" to "take seriously" because the prediction is for category 1 sustained winds and category 2 gusts, along with significant rainfall.

I am not looking forward to this, nor is anyone else. And yet here we are. Nature wins again.

I am scheduled to have the new bivalent vaccine tomorrow just as the storm begins in earnest. I'm not sure whether to go ahead or not; I've read that some people are experiencing extreme tiredness for 24 hours afterward. It feels a little risky to chance that during what is being called "an historic hurricane." But I've looked at the available appointments for rescheduling, and there is nothing in the near future. My last shot was in January, so I am keen to get another as soon as possible.

If the pharmacy doesn't cancel the appointment due to the storm, I will probably go ahead with it.

My mom is going to stay with me for the duration. Maybe she can look after me! As long as she doesn't let the cats into the same room together, it will be okay.

If I'm not answering comments for a few days (starting Friday afternoon) it will be because we have lost power. I'll be back as soon as I'm able.

Being vertically challenged, at just under five feet in height, I felt special when I found this meme (with apologies to the tall people reading):

Of course, tall people also dry out first once the rain has stopped 😄

I know that Marie of Island Musings with Marie is facing this in PEI also. Good luck, Marie.

For the rest of you, I hope you have no storms looming, and have a good weekend.

  2. Been there done that. Vaccine that is. I got the new COVID and Flu shots at the same time. One arm was sore for a few days, one was not. I don't remember which was which on the shots.

  3. I got the shot last Friday, and other than a little soreness in the arm where I got it the next day, had no ill effects.
We got the remnants of tropical storm Kay, and that manifested in a couple of days of rain, which sort of came as a relief in these parts where there was a heat wave and multiple wildfires.
Good luck with Fiona, it looks like a beast. Hope things go well with your mom being there, I know that can be tricky. Tell the cats that I said to behave themselves. That will probably have the same effect as it does here with our cat, which is to say none at all

  4. Do you know the term virga? Virga could save you getting wet if you are in that sweet spot. Good luck with your 'weather event'. It seems when dire weather is forecast it is not so bad. It is when it isn't forecast that is big trouble.

  5. I do hope that both you and Marie stay safe.
And that the vaccine doesn't cause too much grief.
    As always, hugs to you.

  8. Hope you come through OK! As you know I'm originally from Florida so I've been in this position and it's never any fun. I'd go ahead and get the vaccine. The chance that it would affect you so badly that you'd have trouble coping with the storm seems small to me. (But that's just my instinct and I have no scientific knowledge to back it up!)

  9. Red: Thanks; I'm hoping it'll be less severe than the forecast indicates.

Mike: A double shot - you're braver than I am. I'm glad to hear you didn't have much, if any, trouble with the bivalent shot.

Doug: I'm pleased to hear you had no ill effects except a sore arm; here's hoping that's the limit of my effects too. I'm so glad you got some rain there. The cats will probably sleep through the whole thing! And by the whole thing, I mean all the things. How IS your kitty these days?

Andrew: Virga is a new word for me - thanks for that. And I agree, it's the weather that isn't forecast that tends to be worse most of the time. I hope this one does not live up to its billing.

Elephant's Child: I think Marie may be in line for a worse time than I am, so I really hope she and all of PEI come through okay. I think the worst part is generally the loss of power for extended times. I live on a grid that includes a grocery store, and I have been told that's why we generally are among the first to get our power back. I don't know if that's true or not but it seems like it could be. The hospital is another grid that gets attended to first. Thank you for the hugs and I'm sending lots back to you. I hope you are doing as okay as possible.

Marie: You are so right - I get stressed out just thinking about the wind hitting the house! You take care over there.

e: Thank you. I'll update after the storm, whenever I can.

Charlotte: I just got my shot, so I'm committed now :D At first I read your last sentence as "Hurricane Mother" and that is actually pretty accurate! lol

Steve: I did go ahead with the shot; I'm more worried about coping with my mother than coping with the storm, but it's done now and I'm so happy I could get the new bivalent shot. I know you understand about the hurricane, having been there (as has e, above). We get surprisingly powerful storms here and this one is being intensified by a cold front coming from the northwest just as it approaches Nova Scotia. It's being described as a storm that will probably combine the effects of two of our previous "worst storms" here. Yay?

  11. Wishing you a very safe weekend as you ride out the storm. I expect you are planning on your mother and the cats being disorientated by the whole thing. It took forever to get through to my Dad the Covid regulations, I don't know what we would do if we had to get him to act quickly. I'm watching all about it on the news, fascinating in a scarey way.

Stay safe my friend. I had the Moderna bivalent booster and the side effects were even milder than the first three shots. Just a sore injection site. Nothing more. If you didn’t have an extreme response to the last shots you’ll probably be ok.

  22. I hope you're okay! And I hope that it went well if you got the shot. Sending you lots of hugs.

  23. I'm so late, the storm has probably been and gone by now. How was it? How was the vaccine?
    How's mom?
