Celebrating Black Cats: Redux

Did I hear someone say "Donkey's got the dates mixed up; we just did a Black Cats Appreciation Day post in August"?

Well, if that was you, you're darned smart. Yes, I did do a post on black cats in August (HERE).

But if one day a year is good to celebrate black cats, then two are even better. It turns out that October 27 is National Black Cat Day in the United Kingdom, so we're going to have a bit of deja vu, except without the accents on "deja vu" because I haven't learned to do that yet.

I know some of you are big fans of black cats, as am I, so I'm thinking a second post on black cats will not be a huge imposition. (Spoiler alert: for the rest of you, at the end of the post there are some black dogs.)

First, here is the latest Simon's Cat video, which is about . . . black cats, of course:

And right here, I was going to put some pictures of the three black cats who have owned me through the years, starting when I was about eight, but I ran out of time due to the straw that broke the camel's back . . . I was handling my work deadlines okay, and I was handling my craft fair deadlines okay, and we were eating regular meals (okay, so a lot of the time lately they weren't homemade and they weren't very balanced, but they were food) and we were wearing clean clothing and our two remaining cats were complaining about not getting hours of attention but they were doing all right if you ask me . . . and then today my mama (who you may remember is getting older and has health anxieties) needed to be escorted to outpatients, and those six hours were the straw, as it were. She is fine, don't worry. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

But getting back to my very own black cats, that will have to be a post for another day.

Wishing you a lucky-black-cat kind of Friday, and in case you're a dog person and you're feeling left out, here are some nice black dogs (no, no, not that kind of black dog--the nice kind) to keep you content. And when I was looking for pictures of black dogs I learned that apparently it is as hard to find homes for black dogs living in shelters as it is for black cats.

And one more, just because of the sweet widdle bottom teefies on this little guy/gal:

Sorry about the lack of contrast; it's too late now to find new pictures! I feel like the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, looking at my pocket watch and saying "I'm late! I'm late!"

See you on the other side of the weekend!

  1. Glad to hear your mama is ok(ish).
Six hours in outpatients is a pretty solid straw. Look after yourself. Please.
And of course I love black cats. And we have several Simon's Cat books - which get read and reread.

  3. I love black cats as much as any other, my daughter's cat Missy is black although looking a little rusty now with age. My current cat, Lola, is a tabby, but when her "adopt me" photo popped up on my screen, it was her eyes that drew me in. If she'd been black, I still would have gone to the shelter and brought her home.

    1. Every cat has that special something, at least that's how I feel!

  4. I love black cats and would choose them above all others. I had a love named Martian who I sadly lost five years ago. Now I have my Daisy who has a tabby face, but a a black back. Close enough.

    1. Close enough, indeed :) That is an unusual and pretty combination.

  5. Hi Jenny, I did not know it's harder to place black dogs and cats. That's sad. Our dog was black-she looked like a black German Shepherd. I thought she was beautiful. I like all cats but I don't have any (sad face). Some people in my house are not cat people. Have a great weekend. Glad your mom's okay.

    1. Thanks, Chicken. I was initially surprised about the placement issue with black cats and dogs, too. I find them beautiful.

  6. I could read about black cats every day.

  7. We have a visiting black cat now, who we at first thought was a she but turned out to be a he. The little girl in the other house he stays calls him Smoky (Smokey?) I wanted to follow my friend Sara's tradition and name him after a famous black person (her cats were Charlie Murphy, and Samuel L. Jackson) but none of the names I thought up seemed to "stick".
I'm glad there's a National Black Cat Day in the United Kingdom, I must have missed the stateside version back in August.
Black cats are hard to photograph, but I have a folder on this machine labeled "Charlie pics."
Now if I could just get the cat to quit vomiting on mt bed, I would be much happier with him...

    1. Ack . . . that much vomiting is not normal, according to our vet. Your cat may have a touchy digestive system and need different food. Or if he has very long hair he may need brushed to help keep from accumulating so much hair in his stomach. Good luck; it's no fun constantly cleaning up.

    2. He did it three times, or every time he got in my room. Now I just keep my door closed when he's around and he seems fine.

  8. Lol. Sweet dogs! My brother's black cat, Snowball, died recently after 16 years of cat service to the family. She is missed!

    1. A black cat named Snowball - I love it. But I know what you mean about missing our cat buddies. It's hard.

    1. That is typical here for an outpatient visit, unless you have a critical issue. My mom had an EKG and heart monitor done right away, but then she had to have two sets of blood work with three hours' gap between them to rule out a heart attack. Hence the wait.

  10. Well, you know me, I just love black cats. But until we adopted the one we have now, I had no idea that it was more difficult to find them homes. That is very sad. I think from now on we'll always look at black cats when we're looking to adopt.

Glad your mom is doing okay! We worry about them as they get older.

    1. Yep, for those who love all cats, it's a good thing to keep in mind!

  11. I like all colors of cats. They come onto my property because I grant them hunting and lounging rights. I say "Hi" to all of them but only the black one says "Hi" back. They do however, call each other horrible things outside the bedroom window late at night.

    1. Yeah . . . unless cats grow up together, they don't seem to take to each other very well.

It sounds like you speak "cat" quite well, Geo.!

  13. Hi Jenny, the people in the cat video have English accents. At home we have 2 black cats and had them when they were kittens. They must be old now. They are brothers and we didn’t like to split them up when they young so we took them both.

    1. Seems that lots of people here have black cats. Did your brother cats get along well?

We had brothers, too, but one died very young. The remaining one is the fellow our son just took to live with him. They are good for each other.

  14. Happy black cats day dear jenny!!!

in our native home back in village we used to have a cat which was not black though yet so adorable and super cute with greyish color with black strips on.

before my marriage i saw her two next generations ,she always slept with my mother on her (traditional bed)

when i was hardly two i was locked once with black cat in room which made my mom so scared and superstitious about black cats for many years .

    1. Many people are superstitious about black cats, but it's not based on fact. I find them quite beautiful. But then I like all cats anyway, even our cranky one :) A grey one with black stripes would be pretty; I can imagine it clearly!

  15. I've never had a completely black cat, but my two tuxedo cats were the sweetest ever. And who knew there was a National Black Cat Day? I learn something new every day!

Hope your hectic life settles down soon...

    1. Tuxedo cats are always beautiful - and are considered black cats too, apparently. And why not, eh?
