Black Cats, And One Black Cat Especially

Today: an update on our kitty.

He is doing well with our son; he settled in far faster than any of us expected. That is a huge load off my mind, and I'm glad we went ahead with the move, even though I still feel guilty that I wasn't able to give him the play time he needed to keep from being bored. But guilt didn't change the situation, so the situation needed changed some other way. And now it's been done.

This is the furry fellow who is now living with our son (picture taken about a year ago):

Like most cats, he likes boxes, especially if they are too small to really fit into.

And here he is again, about eighteen months ago:

He liked to sit on the arm of the chair while I used the computer

Our son just sent me this picture of him in his new digs; he looks pretty relaxed, don't you think?

It's notoriously difficult to photograph black cats. Hint: his head is on the right, his tail on the left.

When he emailed the photo, our son mentioned that yesterday was Black Cat Appreciation Day. I didn't know there was such a thing, but I give this idea a big thumbs up!

And from the internet, a good reminder:

I know that at least two readers here have black cats. And I think they might agree that while any cat is special, a mini-panther has a certain allure that can't be beat.

Hope you have a great weekend!

  1. Oh yes. I have had at least one black cat for as long as I can remember.
I am thrilled to hear that your black baby has settled down so well - and he does look totally 'laxed in the photo your son sent.
Every day is black cat appreciation day here.

    1. Here, too, EC :)
We've had two other black cats as well, including one I was allowed to choose from a litter when I was about eight years old. He was the wildest of the litter of four but he was my first choice!

  2. He's beautiful and could be a twin to my daughter's Missy, except Missy is now showing a few grey hairs and some of the black is rusty. And Missy is tiny, while your boy looks quite a bit larger. I love the shot of him on the piano.

    1. Our guy looks a bit rusty in the sunlight, and up close he's getting a few grey hairs, too. But he is large, yes :) How old is your daughter's Missy?

  3. We had blue and lilac coloured cats. I had no idea black cats were the least likely to be adopted. I must say your cat does looked very relaxed in his new surroundings.

    1. I think they're least liked in the U.S., Joey. Some other info I read said that black cats are actually preferred in Britain; they are thought to bring good luck instead of bad.

  6. I love black cats and had one for fourteen years. He was such a great guy. Today, I have a fluffy, partly black cat that I adore (even though I consider myself a dog person).

I am so glad to read that the rehoming of your cat went well.

    1. Thank you, Arleen - it's a relief. I think no matter what animal we have, if we are pet people they find a way into our hearts. (And sometimes do that even if we don't think we are pet people in the beginning ...)

  7. My dear old Nick was a black cat with a tiny little white heart spot on his chest. I appreciated him every day...and I miss him still.

  8. My cat is a norphan black and white. Does that count?

  9. Oh, kitty looks so happy! How wonderful. A relief for all of you, I'm sure. Just like a cat to try to squeeze into a box that is too small. And to sit on the arm of a chair like it's no big deal! Show off :)

I love the 13 reasons to adopt a black cat! All very true. And that slimming part is a real motivator. After I eat something I shouldn't eat, I go looking to hang out with my black cat. Makes me feel like a few hundred calories have been shed :)

We adopted our black cat in January 2010, the day after the New Year. It was one of the best decisions we ever made. She is one of the most amazing cats I've ever had. So sweet, so full of personality...and so full of attitude!

  10. The only cat I had as a kid was black, with a tiny white spot on his chest. He showed up at the house one day, a tiny black ball of fluff, and was like, "When's dinner?" We didn't know if dad wanted to keep him, until a couple of weeks later we saw him in the kitchen with a little, black, tail protruding from under his elbow...
That tiny ball of fluff grew to more than 20 pounds when he was older...
My friend Sara had a black cat named Charlie Murphy Mew, and when he ran away (for a while, he returned after 63 days) her boyfriend Chris got another black cat that he named Sammy, after Samuel L. Jackson. Sadly, Charlie and Sammy are no more, but both of them had really good lives for a cat.
Glad your cat is settling in to his new home. Cats are usually pretty good at doing that.
As for photographing black cats, I still have a folder on this machine labeled "Charlie pics", because of course I do.

    1. 63 days ... that must give you hope, Doug. Don't give up.

Black cats seem to be well-liked around these parts :)

    2. My Angel is currently still missing and today is day 63, so I'm hopeful that he'll come strolling home any day now.

    3. River, I hope both your and Doug's kitties show up soon. Cats are pretty good at looking after themselves.

  11. Thanks for the update. Glad to hear all is well. I think they should refer to them always as mini-panthers. Definitely would help their adoption rate. Have a good weekend.

    1. The sleeker ones look very much like their larger cousins. Ours - not so much. Tail too fluffy :) Thanks for coming by, Mr. S.

  13. Oh, he's gorgeous! I understand what a sacrifice it was, but, from his point of view, it was the right choice. Just keep looking at it from his point of view:)

    1. Seeing as it's just a keyboard box with a picture of the keys on top, I believe he must be playing "Sound Asleep" ... Never heard of it? It's an original composition :)

    1. Yes, having a cat with health issues can increase our love even when we didn't think it was possible ... we have nursed a couple of very sick cats for extended periods, so I understand the feeling.

Hope your reno is approaching its end, e!

    1. Thank you, baili!

I hope you didn't learn to fear black cats because of your illness. Some people think they are bad luck, but they can't help the colour of their fur. I like black cats! (I like all cats, but that's a badly-kept secret - ha ha)
